Episode 560: Voting Surprise - All Texans Can Vote in Texas Primaries

I’m going to admit something that may surprise you. And if you're not from Texas, it may shock you!
I recently learned that in Texas, you do not have to be registered with a political party to vote in that party’s primary election.
In Texas, you don’t declare party affiliation when you register to vote. Instead, when you show up to vote in a primary, you simply request the ballot of the party whose primary you want to participate in.
That’s it.
Now… most of us are registered with the party of our choice, but that’s separate from being registered to VOTE. I’ve always supported the candidates that most align with my values, yet I’ve never been registered with a particular party.
Which means, being military and having lived in a few places, I wasn’t able to participate in the primary – only the final election.
So today I breakdown how it works in Texas
• When you register to vote in Texas, you register as a voter — not as a Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, or anything else.
• During primary season, when you go to vote, you are asked which party’s primary ballot you would like.
• You choose one.
• You vote in that party’s primary for that election cycle.
There is no requirement to remain affiliated with that party in the future. However, there is one important rule: Once you vote in one party’s primary in a given year, you cannot vote in another party’s primary runoff that same year.
But beyond that? Your choice is flexible each election cycle.

What’s a primary and why does that matter?
Whether we’re talking about money, leadership, or civic engagement, one principle holds true: Clarity creates confidence. If you’ve ever assumed you couldn’t vote in a primary because you weren’t “registered” with a party, now you know. In Texas primaries (and actually several other states), you choose your ballot when you arrive.
